Bad news though........ with my wife's classes being more than expected and my needing a new car soon, looks like the trip has been postponed indefinitely....

I had just finished re-routing your trip to make it more scenic and fun.
The 2nd option includes 2 stops in Las Vegas, NV.
You have to make the detour to Cortez,Co to the Mesa Verde National Park
And a must do was to drive through Yosemite
I made up 2 routes. the 1st one is more do-able.
The 2nd will take a little more time
