Hello, I searched many sites looking for help to try to remove this valve stem to change the cartridge. I removed the handle first from a Moen single-handle, push pull shower valve and now challenged by trying the remove the next part. There's a small Phillips screw in the center that I removed but cannot seem to pull out the valve. Do I need excessive force or am I doing something wrong?

You say you have a push/pull valve. Positemp is not a push/pull.
But you have a screw on the cover plate at 2 o'clock, which means that you probably have a Moentrol. It uses the old style core 1225B and has a balance spool in the body under the cover plate. this was the pressure balance valve design before Positemp.

that handle part should pull off after removing the center screw. if you get it off, apply a little grease/stem lube when you put it back so it will come off easier next time.

grab it with a pair of pliers and rock it up/down.
