External flush button won't reach internal flush button after fix

Hi, Im new to the forum, and would love you guys' help.
Imperial system (image attached).
I had water leaking constant into the bowl, so replaced the valve seating washer. I put the system back together in the same way as it was (so I thought) but not the external flusher button isn't reaching the internal one. Its too far away!
Any thoughts on what happened?

The lid push button is adjustable. Take it off, and unscrew the nut until if flushes properly, then tighten up the nut.
