This happens randomly through the year. MOST of the time the cold is cold and hot is hot. now they are switched. So that means its not a bad hookup or something because usually it works. What could be the issue?

first, turn the cold water supply valve at the WH off. Then, open any hot water valve and after depressurizing, there should be NO flow.
If there is flow, then you have a crossover bleeding between sides.

A faucet left on but the outlet is capped with a hose sprayhead. Check that all your faucets are off

I will try this but it is only happening in one sink in the house. showers are good and all other sinks are good.

Check your valves underneath the sink. Disconnect the supply line on either the cold or hot and then put a supply line
back on the valve and turn it on into a bucket. Make sure the hot and cold are coming out correctly. If so then you
might have a bad faucet. Remember the cold is on the right and the hot is on the left.
