    Banging pipes / hammering

The hammering in my house was so strong that dishes in the kitchen cupboards rattled severely. I built a water hammer stopper from a piece of pipe: didn’t help. Enough to make a feller say, “Durn!”’ I was able to isolate the regulator and meter from the house by disconnecting the inlet pipe...

    Banging pipes / hammering

I had that problem some years ago. The banging was incredible. Long story short: it was the water pressure regulator. It was located just downstream of the meter coming off the street. New regulator - problem gone. The regulator was about 25 years old, give or take.

    LEAK:What Would You Do?

FOLLOWUP Well I had nothing to lose and lots to gain so I tried patching with Plast-Aid. I made a patch from a piece of PVC pipe shaping it with a heat gun. I plastered mix on the cracked fitting and the inside of the patch, pressed/held it in place then slathered more Plast-aid around the...

    LEAK:What Would You Do?

THANKYOU!!!!! I had no idea there was such a tool. With that tool I believe I could: 1. Undo all 6 unions and take the end of the manifold off. Never Thought of that before. 2. Remove the female end of the union from the leaking male adaptor. 3. Then cut off the adaptor between it and the 90 L...

    LEAK:What Would You Do?

This is the sprinkler manifold for my backyard watering system. I know it looks like a prostitutes dream but it functions perfectly, I can easily R&R the valves, it is compact and resides under a good looking cover. I built it in 1982 and it is still good. About 30 years ago it sprung a leak I...

Pipes rattling when water is turned on

Gasket Maker has the answer. The pressure regulator is located between the water meter and the house and may be buried. Mine rattled the pipe/house so bad dishes in the cupboard rattled severely. A leak developed near the regulator or we would not have found it. Even the contractor who built...

    PRV Leak

Hi- yes I did grease it.

    PRV Leak

The PRV I installed leaks or weeps whichever. The pan underneath holds 2 cups and it filled up about 3 times in 24 hours so that's about 1-1/2 qt per day. Not much actual water maybe but it isn't supposed to leak. You can see the leak stain pattern on the tail pieces. The "O" ring is 4/32...

    pipe size

I do like white corn. Anyway can you drill and tap the hole, thread the pipe with standard thread, use a lock nut and neoprene washer? Or just leave the hole unthreaded then use 2 nuts and a neoprene washer? You won't be operating much over 212ºF (because there won't be much pressure inside...

Severe Continuous Pipe Vibration When Valve(s) Open

OK removed and greased the "o" rings and cinched the nuts up but not super tight and it held but did start to weep again. Tightened a bit more - still weeped. Water comes out along the tailpiece. The O ring is only 1/32 higher than the flange and is exactly same dia as the flange. Seems those...

Severe Continuous Pipe Vibration When Valve(s) Open

Speed-my thots exactly. Still it is a longitudinal crack and it is way too narrow for an insertion plus it was buried. Moles most likely pushed up dirt into the box - they do everywhere else. Might it have been a weak spot? It held for 31 years. Could changing the meter just be a coincidence...

Severe Continuous Pipe Vibration When Valve(s) Open

Where to start? Lots to cover. Pics. You can see the new install - no PVC females. I opened up the old regulator (45 minutes) just to see. Nothing looked broke just old. Spring was strong. Diaphragm not broke. You can see the screen is a bit plugged to say the least. I found the cotter...

Severe Continuous Pipe Vibration When Valve(s) Open

There are 4 meters in a row maybe 1.5 feet apart for 4 houses on a private drive and this so far appears to be the only one with a regulator just downstream of the meter. Mine is the 1st house and the pipe is about 80' to the house. The next pipe runs about 250' to the next house. Last house is...

Severe Continuous Pipe Vibration When Valve(s) Open

Ahh So! Look what I found buried in the Saw Grass. Pressure regulator been buried in the ground since 1981. Nobody knew it was there. The box was buried under a big growth of Saw Grass all these years. What made me look? Well the system quit vibrating. Hmm. For some reason I decided to dig...

Severe Continuous Pipe Vibration When Valve(s) Open

I ain't forgot the followup here. The City hasn't got back to me yet. There were 3 meter men and now just one so it may be a while before this gets fixed up. I'll post what happens when/if it gets resolved.

Severe Continuous Pipe Vibration When Valve(s) Open

Polybutylene Replacement Program http://www.ci.redding.ca.us/water/distrib.html About the middle of the page. ======== Looks like page 400.00 might confirm that polybutylene could have been used. ======== I tried to check the meter inlet pipe material but it is vertical below the meter...

Severe Continuous Pipe Vibration When Valve(s) Open

City of Redding California. Reading thru their site I see they have a Polybutylene Replacement Program. I'm wondering if there might be an outside chance that was used between the main and the service connection at the meter. If that degraded and a piece broke loose inside the pipe and fetched...

Severe Continuous Pipe Vibration When Valve(s) Open

Progress! 1. I disconnected the sprinkler lines front, garden and back completely from the house, physically and hydraulically, the pipes didn't even touch. Turned on each of the 3 hose bibs separately and the system vibrated. So!!!!! 2. I disconnected the sooply line just downstream of...

Severe Continuous Pipe Vibration When Valve(s) Open

New meter. Same vibration. Nothing left to do but stand in the kitchen and eat everything in sight. I am going to isolate the supply line anyway to completely remove all doubt because I'm not totally convinced. Had to knock that drawing down a lot to get it on board so it may be hard to...
