Had another plumber out. The pipes are clear. He said he hadn't seen stems like that before in multiple sections but these looked like the American Standard stems in the rebuild kit. He suggested buying the rebuild kit along with the manifold in case the stems didn't fit the existing one.

Sounds simple. My concern is what happens if I get it all apart and can't get it back together again.

The N1140 rebuild kit looks exactly like whats already in place, even the same trim and handles.

I hesitate to attempt the work myself. There is no cutoff valve and I would have to turn off the whole house water supply. If I didn't get it put back together right, the house would be without water and I'd have to call a plumber anyway. And, yeah, there is a plastic insert in the handle.

I've heard that people love Bosch but, that it can be difficult finding service people in some areas and repairs are expensive. Do a search for Bosch service in your area before making a decision. Both local appliance repair services I called recommended Whirlpool.
