to stop torching wood/wires/other pipes, etc. when soldering copper?

I have some scrap duct pieces. You can buy fireproof cloth, but any metal works well as long as what's on the other side won't melt

Thanks Matt30. I can't use the sheet metal as there is some abs and electrical wires that could suffer. I will look for fireproof cloth. Is that readily available?

Found it! Oatey makes a Flame protector sold at HD.

I also used to have a fire proof paste for fittings and stuff. But the fire cloth is very good. When I worked for a company where we would clean boilers, the cloth gasket used for the baffle covers works really good too

I used the Oatey cloth on the face of my BBQ to stop the winds from blowing the flame through the hole and melting the plastic burner knobs.
