Water coming from ground on inlet side of 1 1/2hp irrigation pump

Hello,

I replaced a sprinkler pump and it seems to work fine when on, but on the inlet side water is coming up from the ground when the valve before the pump’s inlet is open. I am new to pump replacement/install so any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like an Artesian well?
