The flapper was leaking on my toilet, so I replaced it with a new universal flapper, which has the hole for the tube and the two ears. I have moved the chain back and forth on the handle and kept it tight, but still have to hold down handle to get it to flush, don't know if its not getting enough air in flapper to hold it up on its own or what. Looking for remedy before wife shoots me

Did you connect it to the ears or the overflow tube? If you connected it to the ears you have to remove the section that goes over the overflow tube. most flush valves have ears. That is the preferred connection point for the flapper.

I slipped it over the tube and hooked it to the ears, so do I just cut off the portion that slides over the tube?

Yeah Scissors is good thing to use for this work...
