Sump pump help

Parents have lived in a house for over 20 years with never having a flooding issue until 2 yrs ago. The basement floor is dirt. I would like to know if a pit could be dug to use a submersible pump without having to install a concrete floor?

Yes.

Install a pit in the floor, surround it with pea gravel. Dirt/silth will manage to get inside the pit but make a habit of periodic maintenance.
