Slip on adapter wont fit

I have a delta tub spout and the adapter wont fit on the 1/2 copper pipe. It gets stuck in the middle where the inside o-ring is at. I can’t get it to slip on all the way. Any suggestions?

The pipe must be round. Try some silicone grease on the pipe/oring

chamfer the end of the copper tube.
In the future, we only use brass pipe nipples for stubbing to tub spouts.
Solid, reliable and never permanently deform the stub, the way that will happen with tightening a set screw !

Does the pipe from the shower valve to the drop elbow also have to be brass if I switch to a brass nipple?

Not galvanized steel, can be copper, some mfrs say no to PEX, brass certainly but rare.
