I can't find a niche that exactly fits my needs. I don't see a problem forming one out of 2x4's and lining it with cbu board but what can I use to seal it? Redguard? It seems like there are a ton of products out there, what do you recommend?

Also, what do I use to tape the hardibacker seams and float them? What do you recommend? Every time I go to lowes or homo depot it seems like they don't have everything I need to complete the install correctly. I'm guessing a lot of contractors skip some of the steps like taping and mudding the seams?

Forgot to ask, someone mentioned using redguard on the CBU seams. However, I already put in a plastic moisture barrier behind my CBU board and from what I understand, you never want two moisture barriers sandwiching your CBU.
