Hi everyone. One of my friends told me that he installed an aerator pump which constantly blows air into his tank to help the bacteria thrive and break down everything quicker. He has had it for several years and now his filter is always clean and there is no odor when he checks it.

I ordered one on amazon and installed it a month ago. The tank had just been pumped two months before that.

My septic has two manhole covers, the one closer to the house is where the solids are and the second is where the filter is and water goes from there to the leach field. The pvc pipe from the pump goes into the first manhole cover.

Since I installed this, there has been a noticeable bad odor in the whole back yard. I was told this was normal to start because the pump was stirring everything around.

A month later it still smells awful and I am not sure what to do. Do I ride it out and keep it on or shut it off till weather gets cooler? Is this normal?

Should I have sealed around the pipe going into the concrete manhole cover with silicone or something to make it waterproof? The pipe fits snugly but its possible that water is getting in and we have had a lot of heavy rain and thunderstorms in the last month.

Again, maybe I am being paranoid but want to make sure that there is nothing coincidentally wrong with the leach field etc because obviously would want to have that fixed before ground freezes. The house is almost 15 years old.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks

FYI...Plumbers jurisdiction typically ends at, or before, the septic treatment system(septic tank).
They would not typically be the best person to advise on a septic tank problem but may, however be familiar with many aspects and common problems with them.
Individual onsite systems are regulated by the states and typically require licensed specialist.
