Replacing faucet washer in New Vintage style tub faucet

This may look simple but it is not to me. Right behind the faucet handles, I can unscrew the piece that looks to be hold in the handles to the fixture but the faucet will not pull out even when I turn it as far as i can. Is that not where the washers are located? Thanks.

Take those white buttons out and their should be a screw in there to take the handles off and then unscrew the
part that you were trying to get off. The stems will be there.

There is most likely a ceramic cartridge under that nut. The chrome nut is most likely only decorative.
