I have a direct vent water heater in an attached garage. The water heater sits adjacent to the exterior wall it vents to. I would like to replace it with an atmospheric vented water heater. I can get a more efficient, larger, and dual anode atmospheric heater for the price of a basic direct vent heater. The folks in the big box stores are telling me there is no way to install an atmospheric heater without running a duct through the roof of the house. Are they correct?

Yes they are. You have to extend a vent to above the roof for a standard water heater.

...this is how i do it..i figure out where i want heat to sit....mark the center on the ceiling.

with a 24'' auger bit. i drill straight up and out the roof.

then i go on the roof and cut a hole for the vent.....install cap.colar/flashing while up their.

come down and set heater, under the vent pipe...hook up
