Need a thingy for my shower

When we moved into this 1974 house, the shower head was connected to something that screwed on to the pipe coming out of the wall. It looked a lot like the tub faucet :



I don't know the manufacturer, but the temperature adjuster says "Temptrol".

Years ago the thingy screwed onto the pipe started leaking where it joined the pipe. We couldn't stop it. A plumber couldn't stop it. So we decided to connect directly to the pipe coming out from the wall:



Now we are doing some work in that bathroom and would like to replace the thingy. Or at least add an escutcheon if we can't find a thingy.

What is the correct name for that thingy, and are there particularly good places to find one?
 
Temptrol is "Symmons" and they have a shower head kind of like what you have described.

Normally the fitting inside the wall for the shower head is threaded.
That copper pipe may have another male adapter on the other end of it screwed into the wall fitting.

use faucet socket to slide over the pipe into the wall to remove it.
