I had a friend of a friend come in and try to remodel my bathroom. He had to move pipes, unsuccessfully I might add. After three days of still having leaks, I hired a real plumber who came in and was finished in an hour.

I have another bathroom on the same floor as the bathroom being remodeled (second story). The tap water in the second bathroom now is tasting funny, like undrinkable, and has an odor. The taste and odor is very strong on the cold water, but very light almost nil on the hot water. I can't exactly identify the taste but I would say a chemical kind of taste or perhaps charcoal??

I am wondering if the first idiot who didn't know what he was doing when soldering, soldered the pipes so much that it somehow got into the pipes and is affecting my second bathroom since they are on the same floor and probably share pipes. The water on the first floor is unaffected.

The real plumber stated that the other guy was using cheap flux and was overheating it so it would just dissipate rather than actually solder the pipe.

    Thank you for any suggestions!

The first guy probably used lots of the lower quality flux, and the residue has yet to clear the pipes. The chemical taste will diminish with time. If the second bathroom is "down stream" from the first bathroom, then this is perfectly normal. You have two choices. Spend lots of money flushing the pipes with the water going down the drain, or try to use the water for flushing/showering only until the problem clears up.

Will my increased use in the second bathroom help to flush the taste out or will it be flushed out by using the master bathroom, which is being remodeled? If it is the latter, then that is the problem, because the master bathroom still isn't finished so there is no water running through those pipes. yet. Thanks again!

Let the water run in any room you can, for now, for about 15 minutes. this will clear out the majority of the taste. After the work is finished, reflush all the house lines.

This actually happened over a week ago and I have since taken many showers and used the water both upstairs and downstairs and the taste is still there. I figure it will take using the water in the remodeled pipes to flush it out. Thanks!

UPDATE: I had a real plumber come in. He said that the guy got the solder so hot that it melted the pipes to my second bathroom, then he tried to fix it with duct tape. Of course the guy says he did no such thing - uuh ok. So they are going to replace the piping and hopefully that will fix the problem!
