Moen shower valve-is this normal?

Hi, I bought a Moen shower valve (volume control) S3600 open box and when you look down on the valve opening, it looks like there's a punchout that was not completely punched out. See photo and black arrow. It's the same on the other side of this valve, too. Is this normal? Thanks for any help you can give.

That does look odd. I couldn't tell you if it's normal. They look exactly the same which leads me to believe that either a whole batch got buggered or its normal and you bought a crappy valve. Either way I think you should consider a different valve.

Buying plumbing stuff “open box” is a huge gamble.
Expect to get defective junk, or parts missing, or fixtures returned by customers who screwed them up.
Not worth it imho.

I'd suggest contacting Moen support to ask them if that is some sort of defect.

Thanks! I did contact Moen (it took 5 days for them to call back) and they say this valve was manufactured before 2009. So I am not going to use it. Thanks for all the advice everyone!
