Installing new commode in Kids bathroom and after pulling old commode I discovered that the flange is about 1/2" above the floor (home built in 1962). New commode fits fine, and base reaches the floor and she does not rock but I have never seen a flange that is not flush with the floor. is this common and do I need to do anything except walk away

you're fine as long as the wax ring seals and the toilet does not rock and sits flush. they are usually installed flush, but in many homes they sit just above due to the flange thickness and the type of flooring installed.

Walk away. :)

Thanks. I just never encountered this before. She is tight and does not rock or leak.
