Yes unfortunately everything in the plumbing world is going to be in short supply in Texas for a very long time including plumbers. Try ordering from an online (mail order) place that is highly respected; bite the bullet; and pay for expedited delivery. Only order from somebody who’s got it in stock, and do it on the telephone not online. Speak to a human being so they can tell you whether or not it’s in stock and when they can ship it.

You can do nothing but replace this with the proper water heater and do your best to sell this one. you should have no issue selling it if you can’t return it.

And for goodness sake‘s pay attention to detail! Make sure you have enough gas pressure, enough water pressure, and all those other requirements to make sure a proper replacement tankless water heater is going to work. Your plumber apparently doesn’t know these things so it’s up to you to understand them.

What would a homeowner do to ensure they had enough gas pressure ?

I understand what you’re saying, they need to check after this guy....but ultimately the homeowner can’t verify the pressures., Toni stall a tankless properly and to do all the “ checks “ that have to be done is just out of a homeowners reach, with very few exceptions.

Sure, people have installed tankless successfully but it’s mostly because of luck.....

I’m referring to gas pressure verification. Most people hook up the gas and see if the unit works......if it does then they pack up and leave.

That’s a recipe for failure.....

Your plumber is at fault for installing the unit even though you supplied it. You’re at fault for allowing him to install without a permit. But, you have him over a barrel. Advise him to call Rinnai and purchase the kit today, next day delivery. Explain you want it installed by tomorrow afternoon. He can pay for 10:am delivery. By Friday you want hot water and a “green tag” from the city plumbing inspector. Otherwise you will notify the city and state plumbing board. By the way, the Texas State Plumbing Board and Examiner is located there in Austin.

I’d tell you to call whoever you wanted then hang up on you if you talked to me like that.
I don’t care what I did without a permit.

He’s not required to have a permit for an emergency water heater install. It can be purchased later.

Plus Texas is begging plumbers to come work, I’m sure they don’t give two craps about a permit.
