Hi,

Have a question about this spot in the bathroom sink where it seems the P-trap connection to the wall plumbing seems to be welded and I am not able to remove it.

Two questions:

1. Is the current P-trap connection funnctionally workable (does it still perform adequately as a P-trap)?

2. How to remove this welded joint (or is it)? Someone might have a tip on how to do it? Is the male cast iron piece in the wall threaded?

And after removal, what kind of trap adapter I can use to connect to the male cast iron piece in the wall?

Thx.

What you have is a solder bushing. It's soldered onto the chrome section of the old trap. It should just unscrew. The setup you know have is a leak waiting to happen. Once you get the solder bushing removed use this fitting along with a new P-trap.

If it won't unscrew then cut the chrome off as close to the bushing as possible. Then from inside of the pipe make two cuts through the bushing 1/2" apart. Don't cut too deep or you will cut into the threads on the fitting. Then using a small chisel or screw driver pick the 1/2" section out. With that section removed the rest of the bushing can be picked out.

It takes some work with aggressive, but delicate precision to remove it..but we do it all the time. Be patient and you can get it out as John said.
