Basic Bathroom sink plumbing question

At a hotel. Some crazy black bubbly stuff just gurgled up into the sink in the bathroom from the drain. Smells rancid. My question is does the water coming out of the faucet get affected by the bubbly garbage coming up from the drain? Thanks!
