Apartment shower leak

Moved in about 10 months ago. Assumed this was just a left over hole from a rod to hold shower supplies.
this past week it started leaking.
I don’t know ANYTHING about plumbing, any ideas ??

Also. There’s this thing on the ceiling of the shower. got 8 screws in it. … dunno what that is either.

Odd. I am assuming there is an apartment above you and this could be some vestigial a piece of plumbing from the apartment above. That access panel may also be for access to some of the upstairs "neighbors" plumbing. I'd call the landlord and get it 'splained to your satisfaction.
 
May be the auxiliary condensate drain from an AC.

A back up drain for the AC when the primary drain fails.
