I have had my dual basin kitchen sink clog on one side and back up into the other from time to time which is usually fixed with a plunger. I had a plumber out for another issue and he told a family member we needed an air gap installed? We do not have a garbage disposal or a dishwasher so what is the purpose? Maybe just trying to get my mother to spend some extra money?

Without a way for the drain water to back up into the potable water system, such as having a dishwasher, there is no need for an air gap. Do you perhaps have a sprayer nozzle on your kitchen sink? Though these usually come with a vacuum breaker built in to the faucet.

I'm wondering if the vent to the roof is inadequate or just missing. Maybe this is why the air gap was recommended?
