I've got a toilet flange that needs to be replaced, and I started to do it myself by cutting through some of the top plastic but stopped when I felt like I might be over my head. I called a plumber to come take a look, and he's saying that because it's glued on and I cut it the way I did, we now have to replace the entire pipe (from the upstairs bathroom down to the basement). Is that really the case? That just seems like a huge job for something that still looks like it could be salvaged here at the top--I didn't cut into the pipe at all and from everything I've read it seems like someone could still get the flange out and replace it. Is there something I'm missing here? He's saying this will be a multi-thousand $$ job.

If I can just do it myself--what's the best way to get something like this off when it's glued on?

Another way of cutting off the old flange from the pipe.
With a cutting wheel chucked into a drill, you can cut the flange off from inside the top of the pipe.
