If this type of auger comes with a 1/4 cable would a 5/16 or 3/8 also work. I am wondering if a thicker cable may not be able to exit the auger.
 
The picture shown is not how you would snake a drain,
Those snakes come with a cable smaller than 1/4" or at least it seems it, and very flimsy you could replace wit a better 1/4" cable but I dont think anything larger the drums are rated for cable length and diameter
 
I was looking at replacing the original cable with Flexicore cable from General cable.
 
You can as long as the drum size will accommodate the cable length other wise it won't fit into the drum, I use general cables, I'm not sure if the male anything smaller than 25'
