I needed to rebuild a shower drain from 2" PVC, and assumed I would use a 2" Fernco to connect it to the existing 2" copper pipe, but the OD is a good deal smaller than the PVC. Is it still acceptable to use the 2" Fernco or is there a preferred method?

You can solder a 2" threaded female adapter to the copper, then thread a PVC male adapter into that. Go from there using PVC.
 
Thank you both. Picked up a Proflex that was made specifically for PVC to Copper, worked great.
