Hello,

I have some neighbors that I think are up to no good and producing drugs. But, to give them the benefit of the doubt, I figured I'd try to rule out more mundane explanations first. The attached pic shows heavy vapor emitting from their main sewer vent/plumbing stack on the roof, from what I understand. Is there anything that could explain this? It also starts slow and follows a curve of intensity and then dissipation. One person thought it could be the 'hot water tank venting'. Keeping in mind this is 70 degrees F out, I don't think so... I've seen it in 100 degrees as well. Any educated input is appreciated.

 That is pretty odd. Can't you tell if it is a sewer vent pipe or a combustible appliance vent. Sewer vent would be solid pipe like iron or plastic.
Appliance vent would be sheet metal and would normally have a cap on it to prevent rain from get into it.

Does it have an odor?

Is it always brown or is that maybe steam and it's just reflecting brown color in picture?

Hi! I haven't really noticed an odor. I did notice a faint smell that wasn't good once (normally doesn't blow my way). Had an acidic quality to the smell. The color is just back lighting from the early sun. It's white in color. I'm fairly certain its the main sewer vent as it's heavy gauge metal pipe with no cover.

sewer gas and rust from your pipes
tell your nosey neighbors to get a life

You don't know what you're talking about, buddy. It's not the only thing I've seen. These people had what looks clearly like a mobile lab in the back yard of the house in question. I thought that was the extent of it and was happy when it left, but it appears there is more to this story.

Looks like a guy working on his truck.
Do you also count how many items people have in the 10 items or less checkout lane?

He did nothing to his truck (which had no plates and he drove anyway). He poured various liquids into the pump-bug sprayers and they built up pressure without pumping (don't use Raid in your truck do you?); he vented one off before loading it up and driving off, never to be seen again. And, for your reference since it appears you need it, here is what they find a labs. I have other pictures of the prerequisite ingredients in their yard. Sorry, but I think you must live in a place that's made you sheltered.

Coming from someone who is so paranoid they ask strangers on a plumbing forum if their neighbors are manufacturing drugs in their pipes... maybe you should raid their house? Be a one man swat team? You could be superman.

Considering you've said nothing about plumbing in a plumbing forum, what are you doing with your life? Seems like your only goal here is to be butt hurt about nothing and waste time. To clarify, I was asking if there was something generic that could explain this. I've also been told to document what happens by law enforcement. You're out of your depth in every regard to this post; you don't have anything to say about plumbing and you don't know my situation. Sorry you got so butt hurt, pal.

tell your nosey neighbors to get a life

Someone told you what it was but you then proceeded to insult them

Get a life man kinda creepy taking pictures of men.

To be honest, I would be a bit concerned if I thought I had a drug lab next door to me.

I almost bought a house down the street 25 yrs ago before I bought the one I live in now. There are some messed up druggies in the house next to the one I almost bought. I think They are still there. About 10 yrs ago they broke into my neighbors house and carried a bunch of stuff down the street to their house. I guess they didn't think anyone would notice.
This is nice middle class neighborhood. Retired cop lives across the street.
most of the neighbors now each other.

My Parents live in Phoenix and the kid next door broke in while they were here visiting and stole some guns and their computer.

Turned out the kid prior to the break in, killed his mothers boyfriend, because he was abusing his mother.

Nothing wrong with being concerned about what the neighbors are doing.

No I agree
But coming on a plumbing forum and asking questions then not liking the answers you receive and becoming an ass about it is not justifiable.
If your so concerned about your neighbors being walter white file a complaint with the police. Don't ***** about it online.

I was addressing his 'nosy neighbor comment'; not so much the 'sewer gas and rust'. But really, sewer gas and rust? Why aren't all the man-holes venting that? I don't know why you're so invested in this thread; It's pathetic really. And do you think I should file a report on it without my due diligence? No. Were you a meth baby or what? You seem awfully defensive. Bottom line, you're talking about something you know nothing about and have put zero practical input into. You're just a sad troll that tries to get their rocks off on a plumbing forum.

Let me lay some knowledge on you BUDDY

A plumbing system is protected by Ptraps, in other words, what is in the air of the house CANNOT be vented to the out doors via a plumbing vent.
only the plumbing system is being vented.
AND yes I have seen both vents and man holes giving off steam/vapor
