Hi all,
First time home owner and clueless about plumbing. When I turn the sink on water kind of gushes out from where the clevis rod connects to the rest of the sink. It seems like water must be backing up from the faucet into this . Any suggestions?

Post a picture of the leaking area.

Sounds like either a loose retaining nut that holds the lift rod inside the tailpiece, or a seal inside the nut is missing or damaged.

The nut should be a little more than hand tight, but not so tight that you can’t operate the pop up.

There is a little seal right behind the nut, which often falls out during a cleaning out of hair from the linkage.

If you are writing about the 'pop-up' rod, that should not leak ever.
So, you have a soft clog in the drain and the fitting needs attention, typically there is a nut that tightens the rod, which has a ball fused in place.
It is hard for first-timers to get down and understand how it all fits together.
