Washer v gasket for bathroom J pipe extension?

The J pipe extension keeps coming loose from the metal sink pipe. The extension has a green gasket in it (see photo). The extension doesn’t really even


YouTube repair videos I’ve seen don’t show this gasket but show a nearly clear washer instead, such as shown in the second photo.

Do I need a washer like this instead of the gasket, in addition to the gasket, or a different solution entirely?

Most troubling is why the extension that used to fit over the pipe no longer seems to.

Clear beveled slip joint washer looks to be in the wrong place in the last pic. But if it works for you.....

The upper gasket looks like it might need replacing. Take all that to the hardware store and get washers for it.

You can get a reducing washer if need be. From pics I can’t really tell what the sizes are.
