I'm trying to understand the code requirements of "IRC 503.6.9.2 Vent Offsets". I'm in the process of installing a 4 inch vent in my daughter's garage in preparation of moving her water heater from the kitchen to the garage. Because of the low roof slope (about 4/12) it was necessary to offset the center-line of the vent penetrating the roof about 42 inches from the center-line of the water heater. I am purchasing a "short" water heater in order leave myself some operating room in order to achieve the 42 inch offset. Using 2 45 degree elbows leaves me just a little bit short of meeting the offset. 503.6.9.2 states that one 60 degree offset can be used. I don't understand however how just one 60 degree elbow could be used at the ceiling and still be vertical at the water heater vent. wouldn't second 60 degree elbow be required over the water heater?
