I was checking the sludge thickness on the bottom of the 1st of three tanks on my aerobic septic system. The crust thickness was several inches, but once I got through that and put my t-post with a tubesock on the end down to the bottom, it hit bottom with a thunk and there was no sludge line on the sock when I pulled it out. I thought that pumping of the system was based on the sludge at the bottom mainly.

Checking sludge level on the 2nd tank with the aerator was about the same. Hardly anything on the bottom. It is a system (probably 500gallon) installed new about 4 years ago in a household with 2 adults and 3 kids (9,11,15) and hasn't been pumped yet.

How do I judge when to have it pumped? thanks.
