Securing Kitchen Faucet

I replaced my kitchen faucet but I'm unable to secure it to the sink. Whoever built the house installed all the sinks right up against the backsplash, so this fixture doesn't have quite enough flat space. The plastic nuts slip when we try to turn them extra tight.

Are there better or stronger nuts available? What can we use instead? Here are some pics:

pull the sink, flip it over. install the fauct, put the sink back

they make brass nuts
