Well, here we are about 6 months later and it began leaking again a few weeks ago. I gave up on the sealing cord (since it failed me 3 times) and bought some Loctite 577, which says it's intended to seal straight threads. It's only been a few days, but it's holding for now. I'm more optimistic about this than that cord.
If you found your way here like I did looking for how to seal the straight threads on your Grohe shower, it's still early for this fix, but I'd say skip the cord and go with the 577.
