Newbie: lever tap issue?

Hi,
As a woman in my 50's trying to do plumbing repairs in my new-to-me home, I have no idea about this type of tap.....is there something wrong as there is an uneven gap in the join in the photo? How do I repair this?(Or can it be repaired?)

no it doesn't!

It may just be tapped on that angle. I believe that dome screws into the valve body right there. All faucets are different so you could start taking things apart and check them.

I haven't taken a tap apart before, but I will give it a go.

How close is that back wall to the faucet? Maybe someone did some jury rigging in order to allow faucet to be activated?
