we just moved in to a new place and after few months my wife noticed that one of the toilet tank has a crack on it. we ended up buying a new one since we were having a hard time finding the right tank replacement.

after long hours of youtube i thought installing a new one is easy, but as soon as i took the old toilet bowl from our floor this is what i found. (see photos)

can you guys please help me with this? it looked to me that there is no metal attached or something to hold the flange and the clay/was holding the screws?

so right now i just put the toilet seat back and told my wife that maybe we should just check again if there are any tanks that will in our old toilet tank and re-use whatever we have here?

thanks in advance

I believe that is plumbers putty and not wax. Scrape it off and discard and you should see probably a cast iron flange under that mess. DO NOT RESET OLD TOILET BACK ON THAT MESS. After it is clean check the flange for cracks. If no cracks put the closet bolts on, wax ring then the toilet.

thanks for your reply.. so i just cleaned it right now and is this a cast iron flange?
looks like there are no cracks.
should i put a new putty just like the previous one or do i have to buy something to put on the top? its almost half inch above our flooring is this okay? also i noticed that the right side is a little bit higher. please check the photos
so what is next? thank you again in advance?

Buy a wax ring. Don't use plumber's putty. Once the toilet is seated and bolted down (not too tight), you should run a bead of silicone caulk around the bottom to seal the toilet to the floor.
