I need to install a Delta Rough-in valve for my bathroom. According to the instruction, the back of valve must be mounted a certain distance from the final wall surface. I know I will have a 1/2" backer board and some 5/8" thick tiles. The tiles are 12"x24". Does anyone know how much thickness the mortar will be?

Your mortar thickness will end up being about 1/4" or a tad less, obviously depending on which notch you use on the trowel, but that is a safe estimate.

5/8" thick tiles? Wow. Last time I saw tile that thick they were imported Italian slate tiles that ran $200 a piece.

First, thanks everyone for your replies.

Okay, the tiles are 3/8" and not 5/8". (5/8" sticks in my head because I recently had to deal with a 5/8" copper pipe which I did not know existed.)

You are welcome! Please post "before and after" pics for us, if you could. We love pictures in here!
