Leaking hand shower connector

Hello,

This connector between the elbow and the hose is leaking. It appears to be leaking from the little holes that encircle the main water hole. What is this connector and what is its function? Should it be leaking? Is this some kind of pressure regulator?

When I blow air through once side of the connector and plug up the other side of the connector, air indeed is coming out those little holes.

It’s an atmospheric backflow preventer.

The brand appears to be Grohe.

Thanks! Any reason it is leaking while I have the hand shower on? The shower head is not sumbmerged in water or anything since this is in a shower.

It’s worn out, you’ll need to replace it.
