Hi. Can I replace the existing valve with the new one I bought? It looks like the nut is on the PVC and the old valve is threaded and should just unscrew but not 100% sure.

Thoughts?

Do NOT use Rectorseal #5 in that situation. That particular pipe dope is not approved for use with CPVC, which is what is there.

On a compression fitting, the seal is created by the ferrule, not the threads, so using dope on the threads is not going to help you out.

The way MOST people use pipe dope, it will be on the threads, the ferrule, the pipe, the nut, their fingers, the back wall of the cabinet, and the dog's tail.

If you want to lubricate the threads to make it easier to tighten completely, use a little bit of silicone grease.

If you want to try to help make a water seal on a compression fitting, use a thin coating of compatible dope on the outside of the ferrule.
