How to get away from mixet

Can't stand mixer shower handles. They keep wearing out and need to be replaced too often. The plastic flow handle rounds out way too easy. Problem is I don't want to go through the wall or tile. Is there any sort of a cartridge that can be used with the mixer valve that will allow me to use a sturdier handle?

Mixit also makes a metal handle which is available at most big box hardware stores.

Get rid of the valve and go single handle.
