Something better than a typical snake?

I wouldn't automatically write off liquid chemicals, at least if you are on a city sewer*. Particularly if the clog is mostly hair, the Lye/Bleach solutions can be useful. Not very expensive but you have to do some label reading. There are generic brands on the shelf but you have to make sure...

Sticky Situation, need advice on how to solve problem with plumber

How much work is left to do? Maybe time to DIY the rest of the work? Find a contractor willing to stop by for an hour and talk you through what needs to be done. May need to buy some tools? Chop saw, hole saw, PEX crimper, etc... but cutting and connecting pipe is not rocket science.

Home plumbing system, intermittent pressure and electricity

What about showering? If the water is not safe to drink then spraying it in you're face is potentially dangerous as well? Not sure what you have access to but plain chlorine bleach for laundry use is a good tank or water system sanitizer. (sodium hypochlorite 5% 4 oz per 100 gallons) Should...

How easy to convert this propane to natural gas

The key thing is to make the modification within the bounds of "knowing what you are doing". If you have some understanding of how combustion works and some common sense, you can figure out if it is working safely or not. The most likely problem you will have is that natural gas pressure is...

Repairing an ABS pipe in a confined area, surrounded by other pipes/vents

I have done this a time or two but most times, you can use a PVC glue that has high solids content. (basically the same thing). The grey or yellow PVC glues are what you need, the clear stuff has very little solids in it. You can also leave the lid off the can for a few hours to evaporate...

    Whole house water filter

I would try a Big Blue filter. You can get one for around $50. Looks like you could fit a 20" unit in that space? If not then try a 10". With 5 BR/baths, you might run into flow issues depending on whether people frequently have more than 2 showers going at the same time. You may have to try...

    Pex bending

What you are saying is that you have no choice but to tap into 1/2" pipe for this run to the garage? You are correct that the 1/2" pipe will limit the flow but a long run of 3/4 would have better flow that 1/2. However, it remains to be seen whether you would notice the difference at the...

    Pex bending

If you really want maximum flow just go to 3/4 pipe instead. You could put a bunch of 90's in and not notice any restriction in flow.

    A new can of worms

I had the same window battle with my wife a few years ago. I gutted a bathroom and changed a shower stall to bathtub with tile surround. This put the window in the tile area and I wanted to block it off but the wife used her Veto power. I was able to slip tar paper under the window. Left a...

Replacing 1/2" copper with PEX - Guidance Please

Sorry, that's me typing faster than my brain works. Pex-A is the only one that works with expansion fittings. Pex-B DOES NOT work with expansion fittings

    Resevoir water

You and your neighbors are very lucky this system has lasted as long as it has. I would say you are on borrowed time. Someone in your community needs to be "in charge" of the water system. That person needs to do the following (or pay a contractor to do it) 1. Monitor the level in the...

Gas pipe too close to servce panel

If we are talking about iron pipe, the only way that leaks is if you hit it with a sledge hammer or there is an earthquake.

    Hose reel sprays water

Never was a fan of hose reels. They are expensive, restrict water flow, and they wear out. Hook mounted on the wall has always worked for me.

Do I really need .25 inch slope for drain?

I saw that article too but then I noticed it is dated June 8 2000 Maybe it is true but I remember the washing machine my parents had in the 70' that discharged 20+ gallons at a time out of a 1 1/2" tube.

Do I really need .25 inch slope for drain?

Not sure I agree with the statement of high discharge rates. The last 3 washers I have owned were high efficiency units that never dumped more than 3 gallons at a time into the drain. The drain pumps were tiny and discharge was through a 1" tube. Can you even buy an 20th century type washer...

    Washing Machine Lint

Comment about a dry well reminded me of when I lived in south florida (in the 70'). Almost everyone ran a pipe straight outside and dumped the water on the ground. Sandy soil soaked it up in minutes. I suppose that's a code violation now?

    Washing Machine Lint

Some would argue that you should have a lint filter on the washer output if on a septic system. I sort of agree with this but not sure how big a deal it is. The theory is that synthetic (non biodegradable) fibers from clothes can end up in your drain field and cause it to fail prematurely...

Can I put a bathroom in basement?

Have you thought of making it a full bath with a toilet? The pumps are designed to handle solids. I think you would need a rear discharge toilet and it would have to be on a platform so maybe not worth the expense but something to consider.

    Professional-Grade Faucets?

If I were being asked to spend 30% more for a shower control or sink faucet I would expect to have the contractor show me how his selections are superior to what I can buy at Home Depot. When I say "show me" I mean put a Depot valve on the table next to his valve and point out the differences...
