I looked at other similar threads but didn't see one that addressed my problem.
I have an older wall mounted tank that connects to the toilet with a brass flush ell. It was constantly running so I was in the process of simply replacing the flush valve with a new plastic one. That's when I found out that it had what may have been the original metal flush valve (Douglas based on my research) and the fill tube snapped off. Upon disassembling the tank, and the flush valve, learned they were all old, all metal. In disassembling the ell from the flush valve, the ell broke (which I understand is normally the only way to separate the two).
I bought a new ell and a new flush valve (a basic plastic one). I cut the ell with a dremel to the right size, and tried to marry the flush valve with the ell but I continue to have leakage. I can see a small gap between the ell inside the valve where I'm assuming the water is getting in and leaking out of the tank.
I think I have everything properly cinched down (washers and nuts). I suspect my problem is a) I need to put plumbers putty between the ell and the wall of the flush valve to seal it off completely and/or b) I need to get an old fashioned brass Douglas valve because I wont be able to marry a brass ell to a plastic flush valve. All of this is just my guess. Any help greatly appreciated.
