We are replacing our gas water heater that was installed in 2000. The install company said I need to replace the expansion tank to meet code. Is this correct or can I just continue to use my old expansion tank (WXTP-8)which seems fine. Thank you!

Expansion tanks do not last that long so it is best to replace.
When doing so, best practice is to have a shutoff valve and a drain valve connected, or use a Johnstone combination assembly, so that if the expansion tank needs changing, it can be done without muss or fuss.

If it has a precharged bladder, check the air pressure over the bladder. If it is holding at 2-psi over the system static pressure it is still good.

Did they mention why you had to change it to meet code? For them to make a statement like that, I would have to guess it was due to size.
If it was due to it not working properly, I'm sure they would have mentioned it.

The only comment they made is that it was necessary for Universal Plumbing Code but didn't exactly say 'why' mine needed to be replaced. The current size is OK and no operational problems detected since this was not an onsite visit. I am guessing it is just because, as one other responder said, it could just be the 20 year old age. It would be nice to leave it, but if I did not replace it, then the inspector might have a problem with that.

If they made reference to "Universal Plumbing Code" then it all makes sense now.:confused::eek::eek:o_Oo_O
