I live off a lake and believe I have a pump tank between my house and septic tank because there was no room behind the house to put a septic tank and the land to the side is at a higher elevation.

I have seen diagrams where people have a pump tank after the septic tank.

Is it common to have a pump tank between a house and septic system?

Well it’s not uncommon. We have them on several of our older Forest Service compounds, where our environmental folks decided we were too close to water, or actually in a wetlands.

And I’ve advised one of the local companies on ones installed at private residences.
