In the summer, we are going away for a month, and I will turn off the water to the house. Do I need to unplug/turn off the water softener and the gas water heater when I turn off the water to the house? Thank you for your help.

If you turn off the water to your house, absolutely turn off your water heater. You don't have to turn off the gas, but you can do that as well. The water softener won't really matter, but it won't hurt.

We always turn off the power to the softener too, otherwise it may try to regenerate, and not have enough water to do it. But then you have to reset the timer when you re-start it.
