Hi All

I'm in north Chicago on city water

My house was built in 40's and many of the interior pipes are iron (and inside walls in finished basement)

I get a lot of stains in toilets and tired of using britta filters for drinking water ( I'm not confident in quality of city water)

I'm considering something like a springwell whole house system (https://www.springwellwater.com/), but not sure if if it's worth doing it if all interior pipers are iron. I know it will help with some stuff, but is it worth purifying water and then pushing it through iron?

I know I could do an under sink RO system, but would really like whole house solution

TIA

Mark

i think i would just filter where ever you consume water ,when you say iron do you mean, galvanized pipe, brass,if you just filtered the cold for one sink it may give you a gauge go how much is being filtered you may also want to take a water sample Unfiltered,...to the town or even a pool co the will tell you whats in the water

Doesn't your municipality (don't all cities) provide a water report each year?
Most people only need filter drinking water unless you really want to get rid of all disenfectant residue, which is usually overkill.
So, yes a whole house filter is cool if you like to spend money for no big reason.
You are much better off having your house repiped, since whatever ferrous piping you have is terminal (i.e.: has reached the end of its useful life).

in terms of a whole-house filter vs. an under-the-kitchen sink reverse osmosis filter, we went with the RO system because we felt that 100% of our drinking water comes from the kitchen tap. we installed a whole-house DESCALER to treat the entire water supply coming in the house.

All public ware systems are required to at least annually publish reports on their water quality. It is is covered under the Clean Water Act.
