Is it hard on my well pump to run sprinklers because of back pressure and hours of use? Is it Better to fill reservoir and then use sprinkler pump?

It’s hard on your pump to cut on and off repeatedly.

Idealy you want the pump to come on and run continuously until the irrigation system shuts off.

There is a product available named “ cycle stop “ that allows the pump operation to be continuous without cycling the pump on/off and offers run dry protection.

Filling a reservoir and using a pump to empty it would work too but your pump may be cycling to fill the reservoir and then you’ll need another pump to pump out of the reservoir.

Id just use the cycle stop valve, more efficient and less maintenance.

Like Twowaxhack says. Pumps are made to run 24/7/365. I have one pumping stock water that hasn't shut off in over 19 years so far. Cycling on and off is what kills pumps, and running sprinklers makes pumps cycle on and off a lot. Adding a Cycle Stop Valve is an easy fix. You don't want the trouble and expense of double pumping unless you have to. Even then you still need a way to keep the sprinkler pump from cycling. You can use a Cycle Stop Valve on a booster pump as well if you like, but one on the well pump is all you need.

You just need to run enough heads so the pump never shuts off, as long as your well can supply that much water. Most 1/2 hp submersibles will run 3-4 heads and maintain about 50 psi, that's perfect.

If you can make all the sprinkler zones match the output of the pump, the pump will not cycle. But if it takes 4 sprinklers to keep the pump running, you can never run 3 or less as it will cycle the pump to death. The Cycle Stop Valve lets you match the sprinklers to the yard, not the pump. The CSV does not let the pump cycle when running 1-2-3- or 4 sprinklers. Most times it is hard or even impossible to make every sprinkler zone use exactly 4 sprinklers.
