Hi all

I am facing an intermittent issue where the drain shown in the picture backflows. On some occasions, the washer is running and that's when this occurs. On other occasions, the washer is not running and it occurs. The pipe shown in the picture is connected to an open drain. The picture is taken in the basement of the house.
Any tips on troubleshooting this further?

Thanks for your response. It's not pictured but the washer drain hose does go into a vertical PVC pipe, which then elbows into the pipe pictured above.
You were right about a clog!

We observed that if we flushed a toilet upstairs or in the basement, the water would backflow as shown in the picture, leading us to believe that the main drain line leaving the house was clogged.

After four hours of using a snake, we found tampons and baby wipes! F*$*ing renters!
