If That's the way you want to go, You can undo the slip joint nuts and even replace the drain shoe section with a new one. Use a new nut and slip joint washer. (Don't use a nylon washer that come with plastic drains.)
When ever I install a brass Waste & Overflow I always solder them together and omit the slip joint nuts. It's very hard to do but once the tub is in you don't have access to the slip nuts if they leak.
But It looks like that one lasted with out leaking. If it leaks I guess you could cut through the ceiling below to get to it.
