I am trying to replace a toilet shut off valve. I used a 1/2 cutter to remove the pipe since it was soldered on. I purchased a brass craft 1/2” , 1/4 times n straight valve and it doesn’t fit....the nut will not go over the remaining pipe. The weird thing is that I am able to insert the piece of pipe attached to the new shut off valve and it fits.....what am I missing here?

Come to find out it was a threaded pipe. When I twisted it off a piece broke inside the remaining pipe in the wall. I can’t replace the pipe I took off because of the broken piece. Any suggestions?

can you see what the nipple is connected to??????
its possible you could get a basin wrench in there
you could also try an easy out it goes inside the pipe but it might tough because the easy out is short...
but you maybe able to use the basin wrench on that also
its gonna take some patience

Your pictures are too blurry and your description of the situation is hard to follow.
For me, anyway.
Start with better pictures.
Take more than you think you need, just post the good ones.

Are you saying you thought you were cutting copper rubing, but then it turned out to be threaded steel, or maybe brass, or copper with threaded fittings?
